1994

1994 is a new trail with a very prestigious pedigree – Slovenian cross-country cycling competitors raced along a very similar route back in 1994, hence the name. The trail has been completely renovated and adapted to the needs of so-called “all-mountain” bikers.

The trail offers two ascents and descents and connects the beginning of the Drčev rut Trail Park with the already established Kinder Surprise trail. Signs lead bikers to the trail from the crossroads at Jasna Lake, where the trail climbs uphill before a short but fun descent to the Drčev rut clearing. This is followed by a second ascent and an easy ride to the next descent, which provides a fun ride to a chute climbing toward a dirt road. The road then ascends to the last descent called Kinder Surprise.

Kinder Surprise

Official MTB trail. Kindersurprise is the perfect name for this trail, it has it all (single trail, jumps, berms…) Whole circle is 10 km long and it would take about 90min to go around / the ascent is long 1,5 km.

At the top, the trail is more about a natural single-flow trail with some nice jumps and berms. After that terrain becomes steeper and more difficult. The trail is still half of a meter wide and flowy with two steep berms. After this steep part, the trail becomes flatter and more like in bike parks, with big berms and jump lines (small jumps and bigger table jumps and one step up). It is possible to roll over all jumps if you don’t want to jump them. After this section obstacles become smaller berms and waves. After the trail, you will need to cross a small creek and then you start descending on a gravel road. Later on, this gravel road crosses the asphalt bike lane. To return to Kranjska Gora you must go left and follow the bike lane.

Robe Twist

This is the first official mountain cycling trail that provides maximum enjoyment for the entire spectrum of mountain bikers. The climb itself is something special, as it constantly rewards us with the view of the Julian Alps. From the beginning, the trail takes us through the picturesque Stan valley, past Podkoren, and towards the Wurzen Pass. A little before that, turn right onto a forest road that leads us to a gentle incline on the south side of the western part of the Karavanke ridge. The time spent cycling passes quickly, thanks to the beautiful view of the Julian Alps opening behind Brvoge, where a television tower stands. Keep crossing the slope, corroded by gorges, and observe the grassy strips of the Kranjska Gora ski slopes climbing towards the peak of Mt Vitranc. Just before we reach the Jurež pasture, we take a left turn, which is only 10 minutes away from the start of the descent. The descent is simply pleasurable and enjoyable for experienced bikers as well as those who still find such routes challenging. As the name RobeTwist suggests, you will twist, lean, and bend along the path, slowly descending towards the pastures in Robe. On the entrance and the route itself, there are informative boards laying out the rules of conduct, and warning signs that will help you on your first descent. The trail ends at the Srnjak restaurant in Galerše, where you can enjoy some refreshments and share your experience with friends. The way back to Kranjska Gora follows a macadam road

EXTEND TO

Podkoren Village
Kranjska Gora, Slovenia

The village Kranjska Gora is surrounded by vast spruce forests, crisscrossed by numerous paths. Explore the forest glades, vast meadows, and pastures in the surroundings, with beautiful views of the Karavanke mountain range and the many peaks of the Julian Alps. Most of the paths away from the tourist attractions are rarely used by tourists, as few visitors are aware of the network of footpaths that cross the regional road, opposite our apartments.

“Kozolci” (hayracks) are specific to the Upper Sava Valley. Due to the very humid climate, they have been and continue to be used as a preparation for drying hay.

If you want to take a short walk, get some exercise, get some fresh air, or just run, you can do a circuit through the woods and surrounding meadows (map above). The paths and tracks are arranged and suitable also for short family walks and anyone who wants to enjoy nature and silence. And don’t worry – you won’t get lost, as all paths and tracks lead back to Kranjska Gora or the nearby village of Podkoren. You can also explore the trails with a mountain bike and if you want to have a picnic in nature, you will quickly find a suitable place here.

Directions for the trip

From Reset Apartments, take the bike path in the direction of Podkoren (approx. 50 m), then turn right, where you cross the main road and the bridge over the Sava River. After a few meters, you will reach the crossroads where the forest begins. The left path leads to Podkoren but you turn right up the hill along the forest path. Keep left at the crossroads and follow the path that crosses the meadows to the next forest track that leads you along a small ridge and eventually descends back to the macadam road. You can turn right to Kranjska Gora or left, back towards the village of Podkoren.

If you wish, you can visit the village and return to the apartments along the bike path or the path across the meadows along the Sava River as shown on the map above.

    Kranjska Gora, Slovenia

The fairytale winter landscape around Kranjska Gora is the perfect terrain for recreation and enjoying the outdoors, with around 40 km of well-maintained cross-country ski trails running from the Martuljek Forest to Planica and Tamar. The trails have several levels of difficulty and are suitable for beginners, families and the more experienced. If you are going to get on cross-country skis for the first time, we recommend that you follow the cross-country ski courses offered by the local ski schools. Equipment is also available for rent at the many ski rent shops in the area.

In Planica, you can ride through the world-famous cross-country skiing events that take place every year in the beautiful valley below Ponce Mountains. The events are renowned for their good organization and a large number of visitors, which was instrumental in winning the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2023. The Championships have made history as one of the biggest sporting events in the whole of Slovenia.

Nordic skiing in Planica has been developing continuously since the beginning of the last century, culminating in the complete renovation of all ski jumps and the construction of a modern Nordic Centre, which Planica really deserves. The sport is also the lifeblood of the locals and of the nearby village of Rateče, where tourism has recently been strongly developing.

Cross-country skiing is becoming increasingly popular

In recent years – it has become a leading discipline alongside ski flying, as more and more attention has been focused on building new cross-country skiing trails and maintaining the quality of the existing ones, as the unspoiled nature and the backdrop of the mighty mountains of the Julian Alps – Ponce Mountains – have led to a huge increase in the number of visitors every year. Efforts have also been made to ensure an adequate number of car parks, which are a growing problem due to the high number of visitors.

Suitable for beginners and professionals alike the slopes from Kranjska Gora past Podkorn to Rateče are mostly sloping and run along a cycle path just below the ski slopes. There are a few short breaks due to the crossing of roads and ski slopes, and from Rateče to Planica it runs through forests, meadows, and forest glades in the back part. From Planica onwards, there are groomed trails all the way to the end of the picturesque Tamar valley (from Rateče to the Tamar lodge, the trail is about 7 km long and is a bit more challenging due to the 260 m ascent). In Planica itself, there are over 25 km of groomed cross-country skiing trails at an altitude of between 800 and 1,100 meters.

If there is enough natural snow, there are also trails in the Gozd Martuljek, Mojstrana, and Zgornja Radovna. You can also go for a recreational run in the evening, as there is a circular track behind the Hotel Kompas, which is illuminated with floodlights. The Planica Nordic Centre also has an underground hall with artificial snow on which cross-country skiing is possible even in summer.
