17TH INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF ALPINE FLOWERS

The International Festival of Alpine Flowers is a bouquet of botanical tours, events and culinary experiences dedicated to wild plants, the floral wealth of Bohinj and the local offer.
Festival events take place every year in May and June at various locations in Bohinj, which comprises 24 villages and extends over more than 300 km².
The exceptional plant richness of the wider area of Bohinj has long aroused the interest of botanical experts and the admiration of lovers of nature and its beauty. From the first beginnings of the scientific study of Slovenian flora, the mountains above Bohinj were considered a real treasure trove of alpine flowers. The floral richness of Bohinj and the mountains above it from early spring to autumn is a feast for the eyes of everyone who visits Bohinj and its surroundings. As soon as the snow melts, telohs and other harbingers of spring bloom luxuriously… colorfully blooming meadows and hayfields, shy wild flowers and the luxury of mountain flowers up to the highest peaks in summer… and when the forests glow with autumn colors, the beauty of flowers in autumn – all this just offers to the eyes. But: the more we know about something, the more we notice! If we at least get to know plants and wild flowers a little deeper, the beautiful yellow flower will no longer be just a yellow flower – but our friend, about whom we will know a lot of interesting things and will be all the more happy to meet her!
A lot of knowledge, stories, old wisdom, scientific discoveries are connected with flowers, they accompany us from birth to death, inspire creativity and beautify life. All these points of interest are often overlooked in the frenzied daily rhythm of life. Unfortunately! In addition, all this floral wealth needs our care and protection in order to be able to preserve it for the future.
Many things threaten many types of plants, and some are even threatened with extinction. In order to give the floral richness of Bohinj, the Triglav National Park and Slovenia its true value, to encourage learning about alpine flowers, the scientific knowledge and creativity associated with them, and to enable visitors and locals to experience Bohinj’s nature and cultural heritage in a richer way, we decided to at the time when most wild flowers bloom, we dedicate a few days to floral themes. From botanical insights to folk traditions, from artistic creation to getting to know what everything is not only beautiful – but also belongs in the pot and on the table! And so the idea of the International Festival of Alpine Flowers in Bohinj was born!
