Enjoy a ride through the Upper Sava Valley, across bridges over the Sava River, with magnificent views of the Julian Alps. The route to Mojstrana is fully paved and follows one of the most beautiful and longest cycling routes in Gorenjska – from Jesenice to the Belopeška Lakes. It is named after the sadly passed Slovenian cyclist Jure Robič and runs along a disused railway line – part of the D-2 cycling route linking Croatia and Italy.

Cycling route Kranjska Gora – Mojstrana cycling route follows the Sava River along the route of the former railway. The cycle path is close to traffic and, as it does not contain any major climbs or descents, it is really suitable for families with small children.

From the Reset Apartments, turn left along the cycling route to Kranjska Gora, ride through the center straight past the church, and continue downhill past the fire station all the way to the bypass. Here you cross the bridge over the Pišnica River and stay on the road until you reach the cemetery, where the cycling route starts. From here on, miles of unspoiled nature, the coolness of spruce forests, and unforgettable views of the mighty Julian Alps await you. The route passes by the village of Martuljek, along the Sava River, over numerous bridges and several small resting places where you can relax or have a picnic.

For mountain bikers

If you are a mountain biking enthusiast, you can leave the cycling route in the village of Martuljek and join the regional road where you turn left at the turn-off for Srednji vrh. You will have to climb up to the village of Srednji vrh and on to Blekova planina and the mountain pass below Trupej, which is also the highest point of the tour. Return via Grajščica and Kesišče and continue onwards all the way to the village of Belca.

You can choose to visit the Slovenian Alpine Museum as your cycling destination or continue up the Vrata Valley, see the Peričnik Waterfall, or have a stew at the Jakob Aljaž House. For those with a lot of stamina, we recommend that you continue through the Radovna valley, past Jezero Kreda, all the way to Jezero Bled, or even further to Lake Bled. You can also drive to Jesenice and on through many villages of the municipality of Žirovnica – along the cultural heritage trail, and return along the trail to Jezero Bled and the Radovna valley. The circular route Mojstrana – Jesenice – Žirovnica – Bled – Radovna Valley is extremely long and suitable only for sporty cyclists who like to cover long distances.

Slovenian Alpine Museum

The Slovenian Alpine Museum is a must-see. It contains a rich collection of historical artefacts and an extensive specialist library. It reminds visitors of the importance of mountaineering in Slovenia with a variety of photographic and archival material. You can see the permanent exhibition, learn about the historical development of mountaineering in Slovenia, and choose from a variety of souvenirs and books with mountaineering content in the shop. An introductory film and eleven different sections with challenges, tests and tasks add variety to the experience. If you collect all the stamps along the way, there’s a prize waiting for you at the end.

The Belopeška Lakes have several names. Mangart lakes, Fusine lakes, Klanško lakes, Laghi di Fusine in Italian, Weissenfelser Seen in German, and Lâts di Fusinis in Friulian. Quite a lot of names, no? The Belopeška Lakes consist of two large lakes (Klanško and Mangart lake) located in the Mangart valley near the village of Trbiž, not far from Rateče and the triple border between Italy, Austria, and Slovenia. The Slovenian name derives from the place name Bela Peč. The area of the two glacial lakes was declared the Belopeška Lakes National Park by the Italians in 1971. They are bounded to the south by Mount Mangart and to the east by Ponce Mountains. The upper lake, with a depth of 10 m, lies at an altitude of 929 m, and the lower lake at 924 m.

If you want to take a beautiful family photo, you should visit not only Lake Jasna but also the Belopeška Lakes in neighboring Italy.

The trail to the Belopeška Lakes is a bit longer but not too demanding and is ideal for longer family trips. From the Reset Apartments, turn left and follow the cycle path, which initially runs along the northern edge of the Triglav National Park, just below the Vitranc ski slopes. It takes you directly to the border with Italy, so don’t forget your ID cards. At the turn-off for Rateče, there is a small swamp that turns into a beautiful lake during heavy rains in spring and autumn. In winter, of course, if the water level is favorable, the lake turns into a beautiful ice-skating rink in nature.

We recommend that you take time for a short stop to visit the Zelenci Nature Reserve or take a drive through the idyllic Alpine village of Podkoren. Before turning off towards Planica, you can take a detour through Rateče, where you can experience an adventure in the Escape Museum or stop at one of the many taverns and restaurants that are known far and wide for their exceptional offer of homemade food and drinks. You can also stop at the Pehta log cabin, located under the Podkoren part of the ski resort, just before the turnoff for the Zelenci Nature Reserve. Here you can always try ’spoon dishes’.

Crossing the border is easy, as you are only reminded that you are already in neighboring Italy by a sign indicating that you are crossing the national border. Shortly after crossing the border, look out for the signpost – straight ahead for Tarvisio, left for Lago di Fusine. Turn left along the path through the meadows into the woods and follow it all the way to the main road, which takes you directly to the lakes. If you miss the turn-off, continue all the way to the main road, where you turn left towards the lakes, but be aware that this is a longer route and quite busy.

If you drive to the lakes, you will have to pay an entrance/parking fee. If you want to refresh yourself with a cold drink or an ice-cream, there is a lodge at the lower lake with a terrace and an extraordinary view of the mountains surrounding the lake.

A protected natural heritage Pericnik Falls is one of Slovenia’s highest and best-known waterfalls. Both of the waterfalls are free to visit, have easy access and offer stunning scenery. You can even walk behind one of the waterfalls so, if you are looking for a great family photo this is the right place for you. The falls are located in the glacial Vrata Valley in Triglav National Park, where the water of Pericnik Creek flows into Bistrica Creek. The upper Pericnik Fall is 16 m high and the lower is 52 m. Must see 🙂

Getting to the waterfalls

The waterfalls can be visited in both summer and winter. It is most attractive in autumn or spring when the water level is higher, and in winter, when temperatures drop below zero for longer periods and the waterfalls transform into a beautiful curtain of ice candles and sculptures.

We recommend that you go directly to the waterfalls by car or at least drive to the village of Mojstrana, from where you can continue on foot through the glacial valley of Vrata. From the apartments, you can also cycle along the cycling route to Mojstrana (described in the Mojstrana article), from where you will have a slightly more difficult climb directly to the waterfalls themselves. In the summer months, there is also a tourist bus from Kranjska Gora to the waterfalls (click here for the timetable).

In any case, the route to the waterfalls starts in the village of Mojstrana, from where you follow the road through the glacial valley of Vrata all the way to the car park and the lodge at the Peričnik waterfall. Whether you set off by bike, car, or bus, you will have to continue on foot from here. The forest path is well maintained and fortunately not long. It runs along the right bank of the Peričnik River (on the right side if you are looking from the direction of the car park) and after about 10 minutes it leads to the first viewpoint at the lower waterfall, which you can see from all sides as the path leads directly from the waterfall.

If you want to see the upper waterfall, you will have to go back along the same path a few tens of meters to the Peričnik – upper waterfall marker, where the path starts to climb steeply all the way to the viewpoint at the upper waterfall.

Attractions in the surroundings

If you are already in this area, it would be a pity not to continue all the way to the end of the Vrata valley, where the well-known Aljažev dom (Aljaž Lodge) stands at 1015m, with a wonderful view of the northern face of Slovenia’s largest mountain, Triglav. You can also see a giant wedge with a carabiner, a memorial to all the victims who were taken by the mountains.

Log cabin "Pri Ingotu"

The Martuljek Waterfalls are located in the picturesque Martuljek Mountain Group, just below Špik, one of Slovenia’s most famous mountains. The waterfalls are named after the village of Martuljek, where the starting point of the tour is. The waterfalls themselves consist of two waterfalls, the Upper and the Lower Waterfall. The lower one is 50m high, while the upper one is particularly spectacular as it flows over a 110m high cliff surrounded by a white-rock amphitheatre. Both waterfalls are easily accessible and suitable for a trip with younger children, provided you stick to the well-maintained and marked trails. However, if you want to get right below the upper waterfall, you will have to climb over a difficult passage secured with ropes, which is only suitable for experienced and well-equipped hillwalkers, so we advise against this part of the trail.

Upper waterfall

The Martuljek waterfalls, fed by the Martuljek stream, are located in an area that was declared a landscape park in 1949 and became part of the Triglav National Park (TNP) in 1981. The waterfalls are most beautiful in the late spring when the snow begins to melt in the mountains above them, and in the autumn rainy days.

How to get to the waterfalls?

From the Reset Apartments (direction Ljubljana), the starting point of the tour in the village of Martuljek is an 8-minute drive away by car, or you can cycle there on the Kranjska Gora – Martuljek cycling route. You can park at the Triangel Hotel, but please note that the parking lot is often busy on weekends and during the peak tourist season. There is no entrance fee to visit the waterfalls!

From the car park, follow the asphalted cycling route straight to the forest path, which is well-signposted (you can also find it in the “Google Maps” app) and is suitable for everyone, including families with young children. The ground becomes steep near the waterfalls, so take extra care.

The path below the upper waterfall itself, to the small pool, leads through a difficult passage secured with ropes and is recommended only for properly equipped and experienced hikers.

Log cabin “Pri Ingotu”

If you want to try homemade delicacies or spoon dishes, we recommend a short stop at the log cabin “Pri Ingotu”, which is located somewhere in the middle between the first and the second waterfall.

Home-made fruit and herb juices are a specialty of the log cabin, and you can also enjoy a sip of homemade “ta kratki”, a schnapps made by the caretaker’s daughter and her husband. You can also warm up with hot tea made from the surrounding herbs, while outdoors you will be welcomed by the black kitchen, where you will witness the cooking of a stew in a cauldron over an open fire. For those with a sweet tooth, there are excellent homemade desserts.

For cyclists

You can also take a trip by bike on the D3 cycling route, which leads directly past our apartments in the direction of Ljubljana. The forest path to the waterfalls described above is not suitable for cycling, so you will need to leave your bike in Martuljek village and continue on foot towards the waterfalls. The log cabin “Pri Ingotu” can otherwise be reached by mountain bike, but there is a branch off the cycling route onto the forest path further towards Jesenice.

The walk to the two artificial lakes in Jasná is short and without any major climbs, so it is also suitable for younger children, who will be able to feed the ducks and play on the well-kept sandy beaches. The lakes are surrounded by the many peaks of the Julian Alps, which are beautifully reflected in the blue, crystal clear but cool water. Together with the bronze statue of the Goldhorn and the 6-metre wooden tower, the lakes form one of the most beautiful views in the Triglav National Park, so don’t forget to bring your camera or camera. You’ll get the best photos from the watchtower, posing next to the Goldhorn statue, or from the new, attractive suspension bridge over the Pišnica River canyon.

Originally, Jasna was an artificial bathing area with associated facilities for the selected guests of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. The bath was enclosed by a fence and barbed wire and was closed to the public until 1945, long after the fall of the monarchy. The baths remained in use until 1966, when the bottom of the pool was ruptured by an earthquake in the Soča valley, and the torrential waters of the Pišnica River also caused considerable damage. The original pool was filled in with materials from the surrounding area, creating a larger basin that was filled with water from natural underground sources. The present attractive appearance of the site was created in 1981 with the excavation of a second lake.

The two lakes are located in the immediate vicinity of Kranjska Gora, at the confluence of the Mala and Velika Pišnica rivers, on the road to the Vršič mountain pass, and are well-visited tourist attractions as they are two of the most beautiful lakes in the entire Triglav National Park. The location also serves as a must-stop for all excursionists heading to the Vršič mountain pass or further on through Trenta valley and the picturesque Soča valley to Nova Gorica.

How to get to the lakes?

To reach Jasna, follow the path through the center of Kranjska Gora, where you turn left onto the road to Vršič. The road has pavement for walkers all the way to the lakes, or you can turn right onto a well-maintained path that follows the Pišnica River all the way to the bridge, next to a small hydroelectric power station. Immediately afterward, you will have a wonderful view of the lakes and the surrounding area, which is made up of the mighty mountains of the Triglav National Park.

Activities

The destination is ideal for a pleasant walk or a cycling stop. The water is not suitable for swimming as it is extremely cold, fed by melting snow and ice from the surrounding mountains.

Walking trails

The two lakes are small and can be circumnavigated in 10 to 15 minutes. Younger children will be able to explore the surrounding area with a small swamp filled with frog tadpoles in the spring days, and throughout the year they will be able to feed the flocks of ducks and numerous trouts in both lakes.
