WHERE TO NEXT?

Mount Visoka Peč
Mount Vitranc
Kranjska Gora, Slovenia

Ciprnik is an easily accessible 1745 m high lookout peak with several trails leading to it. Thanks to its location, the peak is famous for its magnificent views of many surrounding mountains, the Mala Pišnica valley, the Tamar valley and, of course, the world-famous ski jumping centre Planica. All you need for the route are good hiking shoes, plenty of fluids and a snack. If you have younger children, we recommend that you take the route over the Vitranc mountain, which can be reached by chairlift. We advise against the route from Planica, as it runs partly along the edge of the precipices and is very steep.

Signpost at the top of Vitranc

How to get to the top?

Directions from Vitranc by chairlift

If you only want to go for a short trip, if you have younger children, or if you are out of shape, this option is the right choice for you, as you will only have to climb less than 100 m to reach Ciprnik. It will take you only 45 minutes to 1 hour to reach the top from the final chairlift station. From the top of Vitranc, turn west along the ridge to the top of Ciprnik. The forest floor is level and well-trodden and leads through a beautiful larch forest.

You can return along the same route, or turn down the slope at the signpost for Planica. Descend directly into the Planica Valley and walk back to the apartments. If you have younger children, we advise against this route.

Direction Kranjska Gora – Jasna – Vitranc – Ciprnik (recommended)

The route to Ciprnik from Lake Jasna via the ridge of Vitranc is suitable for all ages as you do not need any mountaineering knowledge or equipment. It is quite demanding in terms of fitness but can be walked by practically everyone with a few stops. However, we recommend good hiking shoes, a good supply of fluids, and a snack.

The route to Vitranc is described in the blog “Vitranc (1.636m)” (click here to see it). From the top of Vitranc, at the final chairlift stop, the route continues along the ridge (see above “Directions from Vitranc by chairlift”).

Direction Planica – Cipernik

You can either walk from the apartments (the route to Planica is described here) or you can drive to Planica.

Park at Dom Planica, where the forest trail starts at the signpost for Cipernik on the left. The path will lead up the steep slope to the lookout point (a small wooden house with a terrace), where you will have one of the most beautiful views of the Planica Ski Jumping Centre and its ski jumps. The point is suitable for a really wonderful family photo. From here on, the trail will lead you along a steep ridge and wooded slopes all the way to the Ciprnik ridge, where the Vitranc trail joins from the left. Turn right and follow the path as it climbs gently to the top.

Return along the same path, either via the Vitranc path to Lake Jasna or via Vitranc directly down the ski slopes back to the apartments.

WHERE TO NEXT?

Mount Ciprnik
Planica
Kranjska Gora, Slovenia

To climb to the top of Vitranec, all you need is a good pair of hiking shoes, and suitable clothing in winter as the climb is not technically demanding. The forest trail via the ski slope is well signposted but it is quite long and steep, for which we recommend taking the longer route towards Lakes Jasna and on along the ridge of the mountain itself. You can see the Jasna Lakes, cross the Jasna suspension bridge, explore the Vopa Cave, and enjoy the wonderful views offered by the many viewpoints along the way. The end of the tour is Mojca Lodge in Vitranc, where you can enjoy a home-cooked meal. On the way back you can take the ski slope route, which leads you directly back to the Reset Apartments. These are located right next to the ski slopes at the foot of the mountain itself.

Vopa Cave

The Vitranc route is suitable for all ages as you don’t need any mountaineering skills or equipment. It is quite demanding in terms of fitness but can be walked by practically anyone with a few stops. However, we recommend good hiking shoes, a good supply of fluids, and a snack.

Mount Vitranc is home to the Kranjska Gora and Podkoren ski slopes and is best known for the Vitranc Cup, which takes place on its slopes every year. There are also two chairlifts leading up to the mountain, which you can take if you have any doubts about your fitness. The view from the top is magnificent, offering views of the Julian Alps and the villages of Kranjska Gora and Podkoren at its foot.

How to get to the top

On the ski slope

You can easily climb to the top directly via the ski slope, following the Vitranc 1 chairlift and later the Vitranc 2. The route is quite steep and will require a bit of fitness. If you have younger children, we recommend that you go at least as far as the end of the first chairlift, Vitranc 1. There is a Bedančev dom (Bedanec Lodge) with a children’s playground, and the view of the village of Podkoren and the Korensko sedlo pass from the final chairlift stop is wonderful.

You continue directly up the hill above Bedančev dom to the second chairlift, Vitranc 2, which you follow all the way to the top. Return along the same path or along the ridge to Jasna Lakes.

Follow the ridge

The ridge trail is much less steep but quite a bit longer, but we highly recommend it because of the extraordinary views and numerous viewpoints. Turn left from the apartments and head through the center of Kranjska Gora to Jasna Lakes (directions to the lakes can be found here). The forest trail starts in front of the lakes, just after the bridge over the Pišnica River, and leads over the suspension bridge, which is one of the most popular adrenaline attractions in the area. The footbridge is anchored on both sides with belt anchors and has a span of 30 m.

At the end of the bridge, turn left and follow the well-trodden and signposted path – follow the signs Vitranc and Cipernik. The trail is mostly through the forest. At the turn-off for Mala Pišnica, you will find the first viewpoint – a rocky ledge that juts out of the cliff directly above the Mala Pišnica river and offers magnificent views of the neighboring Robičje mountain, Travnik and Jalovec mountains (to the right), and Prisank and Razor mountains (to the left).

You continue in the direction of Vitranc, along the slope above Kranjska Gora until you reach the signs for the Pehta Cave (you have to turn off the path to see it, but it is only a minute walk to the cave). The path continues to the top of the ridge, which leads you past wonderful viewpoints and precipices all the way to Mojca Lodge at the top.

Return along the same route or directly along the slopes of the ski slopes all the way to the apartments. If you have enough fitness, you can continue the trip to the neighboring mountain Ciprnik from which you descend directly to Planica.

WHERE TO NEXT?

Dovje Village - Jakob Aljaz monument
Pericnik Waterfalls - Vrata Valley
Radovna Valley - Bled
Jesenice - Zirovnica villages
Kranjska Gora, Slovenia

Enjoy a ride through the Upper Sava Valley, across bridges over the Sava River, with magnificent views of the Julian Alps. The route to Mojstrana is fully paved and follows one of the most beautiful and longest cycling routes in Gorenjska – from Jesenice to the Belopeška Lakes. It is named after the sadly passed Slovenian cyclist Jure Robič and runs along a disused railway line – part of the D-2 cycling route linking Croatia and Italy.

One of the beautiful views along the cycling route to Mojstrana

Cycling route Kranjska Gora – Mojstrana cycling route follows the Sava River along the route of the former railway. The cycle path is close to traffic and, as it does not contain any major climbs or descents, it is really suitable for families with small children.

From the Reset Apartments, turn left along the cycling route to Kranjska Gora, ride through the center straight past the church, and continue downhill past the fire station all the way to the bypass. Here you cross the bridge over the Pišnica River and stay on the road until you reach the cemetery, where the cycling route starts. From here on, miles of unspoiled nature, the coolness of spruce forests, and unforgettable views of the mighty Julian Alps await you. The route passes by the village of Martuljek, along the Sava River, over numerous bridges and several small resting places where you can relax or have a picnic.

For mountain bikers

If you are a mountain biking enthusiast, you can leave the cycling route in the village of Martuljek and join the regional road where you turn left at the turn-off for Srednji vrh. You will have to climb up to the village of Srednji vrh and on to Blekova planina and the mountain pass below Trupej, which is also the highest point of the tour. Return via Grajščica and Kesišče and continue onwards all the way to the village of Belca.

Mojstrana as a starting point for longer cycling trips

  • Continue through the Radovna valley past Lake Kreda to Lake Bled
  • Continue through the Vrata valley, past the Peričnik waterfall to the home of Jakob Aljaž
  • Circular route to Jesenice and onwards through many villages of the municipality of Žirovnica

You can choose to visit the Slovenian Alpine Museum as your cycling destination or continue up the Vrata Valley, see the Peričnik Waterfall, or have a stew at the Jakob Aljaž House. For those with a lot of stamina, we recommend that you continue through the Radovna valley, past Jezero Kreda, all the way to Jezero Bled, or even further to Lake Bled. You can also drive to Jesenice and on through many villages of the municipality of Žirovnica – along the cultural heritage trail, and return along the trail to Jezero Bled and the Radovna valley. The circular route Mojstrana – Jesenice – Žirovnica – Bled – Radovna Valley is extremely long and suitable only for sporty cyclists who like to cover long distances.

Slovenian Alpine Museum

The Slovenian Alpine Museum is a must-see. It contains a rich collection of historical artefacts and an extensive specialist library. It reminds visitors of the importance of mountaineering in Slovenia with a variety of photographic and archival material. You can see the permanent exhibition, learn about the historical development of mountaineering in Slovenia, and choose from a variety of souvenirs and books with mountaineering content in the shop. An introductory film and eleven different sections with challenges, tests and tasks add variety to the experience. If you collect all the stamps along the way, there’s a prize waiting for you at the end.

Kranjska Gora, Slovenia

The Belopeška Lakes have several names. Mangart lakes, Fusine lakes, Klanško lakes, Laghi di Fusine in Italian, Weissenfelser Seen in German, and Lâts di Fusinis in Friulian. Quite a lot of names, no? The Belopeška Lakes consist of two large lakes (Klanško and Mangart lake) located in the Mangart valley near the village of Trbiž, not far from Rateče and the triple border between Italy, Austria, and Slovenia. The Slovenian name derives from the place name Bela Peč. The area of the two glacial lakes was declared the Belopeška Lakes National Park by the Italians in 1971. They are bounded to the south by Mount Mangart and to the east by Ponce Mountains. The upper lake, with a depth of 10 m, lies at an altitude of 929 m, and the lower lake at 924 m.

If you want to take a beautiful family photo, you should visit not only Lake Jasna but also the Belopeška Lakes in neighboring Italy.

The trail to the Belopeška Lakes is a bit longer but not too demanding and is ideal for longer family trips. From the Reset Apartments, turn left and follow the cycle path, which initially runs along the northern edge of the Triglav National Park, just below the Vitranc ski slopes. It takes you directly to the border with Italy, so don’t forget your ID cards. At the turn-off for Rateče, there is a small swamp that turns into a beautiful lake during heavy rains in spring and autumn. In winter, of course, if the water level is favorable, the lake turns into a beautiful ice-skating rink in nature.

We recommend that you take time for a short stop to visit the Zelenci Nature Reserve or take a drive through the idyllic Alpine village of Podkoren. Before turning off towards Planica, you can take a detour through Rateče, where you can experience an adventure in the Escape Museum or stop at one of the many taverns and restaurants that are known far and wide for their exceptional offer of homemade food and drinks. You can also stop at the Pehta log cabin, located under the Podkoren part of the ski resort, just before the turnoff for the Zelenci Nature Reserve. Here you can always try ’spoon dishes’.

Crossing the border is easy, as you are only reminded that you are already in neighboring Italy by a sign indicating that you are crossing the national border. Shortly after crossing the border, look out for the signpost – straight ahead for Tarvisio, left for Lago di Fusine. Turn left along the path through the meadows into the woods and follow it all the way to the main road, which takes you directly to the lakes. If you miss the turn-off, continue all the way to the main road, where you turn left towards the lakes, but be aware that this is a longer route and quite busy.

If you drive to the lakes, you will have to pay an entrance/parking fee. If you want to refresh yourself with a cold drink or an ice-cream, there is a lodge at the lower lake with a terrace and an extraordinary view of the mountains surrounding the lake.

WHERE TO NEXT?

From Planica to Belopeska jezera
From Rateče to Tromeja (Triple Border)
Kranjska Gora, Slovenia

The route is suitable for mountain bikers!

The Tamar Valley is one of the most beautiful glacial valleys in the Triglav National Park and is extremely popular with hikers, mountain bikers, and cross-country skiers. It is bordered by the mighty walls of the mountains Visoka Ponca (2,228m), Kotova Špica (2,376m), Jalovec (2,645m)… There is also the source of the Nadiža River, which sinks into the gravel at the foot and reappears in the Zelenci Nature Reserve. It also serves as a starting point for hikes and ascents of the surrounding mountains. The path is macadam and well maintained, suitable for children.

Tamar chapel and the Tamar Lodge

The Tamar Valley is a continuation of the world-famous Planica Valley, where world championships in ski jumping, ski flying, and other Nordic disciplines are held. We recommend, among other things, that you visit the museum located in the Planica Nordic Centre.

How to get there

From the Reset Apartments, turn left and follow the cycle path towards Podkoren, just below the Vitranc ski slopes. You continue until the end of the ski slopes, where the Pehta log cabin is located. Here you can always try spoon dishes, croissants, or authentic homemade sour milk. If you have time, you can also explore the Zelenci nature reserve, which is on the opposite side of the cycling route.

Continue along the cycling route until you reach the regional road, where you turn left towards Planica, but we recommend that at the end of the plain, a few minutes walk from the Pehta log cabin, you turn left onto the forest track, which will take you through the forest directly to Planica. The path through the forest is also much shorter and more interesting, especially for children.

If you have younger children or you are not in the best shape, we recommend that you finish the trip with a visit to the Planica Nordic Centre and the ski jumps and then return. Alternatively, you can drive and start your journey to Tamar only in Planica.

At the end of Planica, you have two options. You can continue along the wide, macadam track (left) or head through the forest (right) on a track that is intended for cross-country skiers in winter and is popular with mountain bikers in summer. Both trails take you all the way to the end of the Tamar valley, directly below the mighty walls of the Jalovec mountain. Here you will find the Tamar lodge, one of the most popular excursion spots in the entire area. The lodge is open all year round and offers visitors the chance to rest and enjoy good local food and drink.

Activities

The road to Tamar is a full-day trip, especially if you take in all the sights along the way. It’s quite a long walk, so plan at least a lunch stop. On the way, you can explore the Zelenci Nature Reserve, see the ski jumps, and zipline down the Planica Giant (you have to pre-book online for the zipline). You can also try free-falling in the wind tunnel or play a round of Disc golf on the greens below the ski jumps. We also recommend visiting the Ski Jumping Museum, located in the Planica Nordic Centre.
